Care for Country, always.
At Yanawal Units, sustainability is woven into who we are, because we are a 100% Aboriginal owned business built on Yolŋu land, under the custodianship of the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation.
Everything we do is guided by the same principle that shapes our name, Yanawal, meaning beehive. A hive only thrives when every part of it works in balance, and that is exactly how we try to run our business.
Culturally, we operate under a framework that ensures any use of language, story or imagery connected to our Traditional Owners is guided by free, prior and informed consent. This protects the integrity of Yolŋu knowledge and ensures our guests experience culture that is shared on our terms, not extracted from us.
Environmentally, we have set clear targets for the year ahead, including a ten percent reduction in energy and water use by May 2027, the elimination of single use plastics across our units by December 2026, and a feasibility study into solar power for our site. These are not vague ambitions. They are commitments we are actively working towards and will report on as we progress.
Socially, our success is designed to flow back into our community. As part of Rirratjingu Investments, the profits generated by Yanawal Units support employment, training and development opportunities for our people in Nhulunbuy and across East Arnhem Land.
Economically, we exist to build long term, sustainable enterprise for Traditional Owners, reducing reliance on external investment and keeping the benefit of tourism in local hands.
Ethically, we hold ourselves accountable to the same standards we ask of any national tourism operator, but we do it while staying true to our cultural obligations to Country and community.
